CANAL DE RENAISSANCE Birth, Rebirth & Becoming

Product Summary

CANAL DE RENAISSANCE is a loose-leaf botanical infusion created through the #OwnYourRoots x Her Belle Tease collaboration between artist Zo Fan and founder Samm Lewis. Inspired by the Buddhist contemplation of the Eight Pains of Life, this blend explores the Pain of Birth: entering the world, beginning again, and becoming.

Created as both tea and artistic material, the botanicals can be experienced as an infusion, transformed into ink for intention, or returned to the cycle of making through incense. This is a cup of tea. Beauty depends on view. Drinking it will not free you from suffering. Practice might.

Story Behind The Blend

CANAL DE RENAISSANCE explores the first of the Eight Pains of Life: Birth.

To be born is to enter a body, a family, a landscape and a set of conditions we did not choose. It is also to begin again repeatedly. We are born into new versions of ourselves throughout our lives.

The title Canal de Renaissance canal of rebirth reflects this movement between what has been and what is becoming.

Echinacea, angelica and yarrow bring a wild, protective botanical character. Juniper and rosemary evoke clarity and aromatic forests, while rose and chamomile soften the composition with floral notes.

The plants are not presented as an escape from suffering. Instead, they become materials through which suffering can be observed, transformed and made visible.

This is part of the wider #OwnYourRoots x Her Belle Tease collaboration with artist Zo Fan, which explores the Eight Pains of Life through botanical tea, painting, intention and material transformation.

Traditional Herbal Context

The botanicals in this blend have long histories across European, Mediterranean and traditional herbal practices.

Rose and chamomile have longstanding cultural associations with beauty, hospitality and herbal infusions. Rosemary has a deep history within Mediterranean culinary and botanical traditions and has also become culturally associated with remembrance.

Juniper has been used across northern European and Mediterranean traditions, while angelica has a long history in European herbal practice. Yarrow has also been used traditionally throughout Europe, and echinacea has a significant history of traditional use among Indigenous peoples of North America before its adoption into modern Western herbalism.

These historical and cultural uses are provided for educational purposes and are not intended as medical claims.

Eight Pains Reflection

Prepare the tea slowly.

Before drinking, consider:

What am I being born into now?

Perhaps you are entering a new country, relationship, career, creative practice or version of yourself.

What part of the old self needs to be carried forward?

What can remain behind?

Where might beginning again be uncomfortable — and where might it be beautiful?

Allow the question to remain unanswered.

This is a cup of tea. Beauty depends on view.Drinking it will not free you from suffering. Practice might.

Artistic Practice

The Eight Pains of Life collection treats tea as a material that can move between states.

The botanicals can become:

plant → tea → colour → intention → incense → transformation

After brewing, the spent botanical material can be explored as part of a creative practice rather than simply discarded.

Tea becomes pigment.

Pigment becomes mark.

The mark becomes an expression of something that may have been difficult to articulate.
